Parts For 912E 4CYL 1976

About 912E 4CYL 1976

After a hiatus of six years, the 912 made its return to North America in 1976 under the moniker 912E (internal factory designation 923). It was positioned as an entry-level model following the discontinuation of the 914 and pending the finalization of the new 924, which was set to replace the 914. Produced from May 1975 to July 1976, Porsche manufactured a total of 2,092 units of the 912E (the "E" denoting Einspritzung, or fuel injection), exclusively for the US market. In comparison, 10,677 units of the 911 (including 4,784 for the US) were built for the 1976 model year.

The 912E was powered by a Porsche-designed 2.0ltr engine derived from the VW "Type 4" engine originally used in the 1.7-liter VW 411/412. This revised engine featured a longer 71mm stroke crankshaft, new rod bearings, and new pistons, resulting in an increased cylinder bore to 94mm and a power output of 90 SAE horsepower. Equipped with Bosch L-Jetronic / Air Flow Controlled system, later adapted for the 911, the 912E boasted a 20+ gallon fuel tank, achieved 30 mpg, and offered a remarkable 600-mile range.

Sharing the same chassis as the 911, the 912E delivered a driving experience reminiscent of its more powerful sibling but with less weight behind the rear axle, making it less prone to sudden oversteer. It was the only 912 variant to feature a corrosion-resistant galvanized chassis, enhancing its longevity. The interior mirrored that of the 911, although certain components were optional extras. Popular options included 14-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, electric sunroof, anti-slip differential, power accessories, headlight washers, and air conditioning, the latter often dealer-installed. With its limited production run, distinctive features, and heritage from the esteemed 911 lineage, the 912E stands as one of the more sought-after collectible four-cylinder Porsches.
